Mother of pearl is the iridescent internal layer of mollusk shells and is composed of the same material as pearls.
Though technically not a gemstone, mother of pearl is used in all types of jewellery.
Turquoise:
Turquoise is a blue to blue-green mineral of aluminium and copper. Mainly prized as a gem stone in its polished blue form, it derives its name from turc (Turkish in French) as it was transported to Europe through Turkey. It is one of the oldest known gem materials. Ancient manuscripts report that the health of a person wearing turquoise can be assessed by the variations in the colour of the stone and was also thought to promote prosperity.
Amethyst:
Amethyst is the most precious stone of the quartz family. Its colours range varies from pale lilac to deep purple. Its name derived from the Greek word methystos which means “not drunken”. It was named after the Greek mythological maiden who was turned to stone by God Dionysus and is characterised by vivid colours.
Garnet:
Garnet comes in a variety of colours, including many shades of red to very pale to a deep red-black. Like many red stones, garnet was once believed to stop bleeding. It was a symbol of loyalty and energy. Garnet is also said to alleviate anger and promote tranquillity.
Smoky Quartz:
Smoky Quartz is the stone of stamina. If you need more energy into your life, wear a smokey quartz. It enhances self esteem, joy of loving and creativity.
Black Onyx:
Onyx is part of the chalcedony family of coloured quartz, which includes agate, cornelian and jasper. The crisp lines of onyx make it popular for jewellery as each piece of onyx has a unique appearance. Onyx is opaque, meaning no light shines through it. Therefore, it is usually cut into smooth rounded, polished domes (cabochon). Onyx has a variety of myths associated with it. On one hand, it was supposed to drive away evil and high tempers. On the the other hand, it was said to cool the passions of love and promote independence between lovers.
